Despite the fact that countries vary by specific cultures and traditions, nearly everywhere Christams Tree and Father Cristmas are necessary attributes.

Christmas tree and its decorations have an enduring tradition. Christmas tree is regarded as a symbol of success and happiness. Long ago German tribes hang branches of fir-trees at the walls to gain the sympathy of spirits. But lately this tradition changed and people placed fir-tree (lately known as Christmas tree) at home on Christmas Eve.

Trdition of Father Christmas is popular nearly everywhere across the world. The name of Santa Claus which is widely spread in Europe and the United States comes from the Dutch name of Asia Minor St Nickolas.

Clinking our glasses before drinking a toast is also very popular, but a few knows where this tradition comes from. In medieval times, a common way to kill an enemy was to offer him a poisoned drink. To prove to the guest that a drink was safe, the host would receive a small amount of the guest’s drink in his own glass, and both would drink at the same time. If the guest trusted host, rather than pouring some of his drink into the host’s glass he would simply clink his glass against it. As offering a poisoned drink is no longer a popular way to kill someone, the custom of clinking glasses still remains.

Many countries believe in the tradition of first footing. It is believed that the first visitor on New Year's Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. It was particularly lucky if that visitor happened to be a tall dark-haired man.

Traditional New Year foods are also thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year's cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year's Day will bring good fortune.
