Update on Arkport-Canaseraga School Merger Study

In August, the Canaseraga School Board and the Arkport School Board approved resolutions to enter into a merger study under annexation.  The resolutions included numerous assurances, which can be found below.  Following this action, Mr. Groff (Canaseraga Superintendent) and Mr. Harper spoke with the consulting firm of Castallo & Silky to engage their services to complete the merger study.  This is the same firm that completed the studies in the past.

Back in March 2017, we were informed by NYS Education Department officials that we could do an “expedited” study because of the  recently completed three-way merger study.  Following the board approvals (in Aug) we needed to check to be sure this permission was still active.  We have again been notified by NYSED that we are permitted to do an expedited study.

An expedited study will still entail creating a combined merger study committee and reviewing the data findings, but we will be able to do it with fewer meetings.  Along the way, we will distribute information to our school community.  Just as a reminder – the earliest we could combine our districts would be July 1, 2019.  If you have any questions, thoughts, or comments, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Mr. Harper or any member of the Arkport CSD BOE.

Name

The name of the newly formed district would be Arkport-Canaseraga Central School District.

Academic Programs

The academic programs offered currently in both districts would be expanded as determined appropriate by the board with the intention of improving the educational opportunities of all children within the district.

Faculty/Staff retention

All current faculty and staff of both the Arkport and Canaseraga districts would be maintained for a minimum of five years with reductions by attrition when appropriate.

Building Use

The Canaseraga building will be used for the foreseeable future.

Mascot and Colors

Upon a positive vote for an annexation, student representatives from both districts will be given an opportunity to make a recommendations to the Board of Education regarding the District mascot, school colors, and alma mater.  Until that time both Canaseraga and Arkport uniforms will be utilized where appropriate with the goal of producing budget economies.

Board Members

Upon a successful annexation vote, the Arkport Board will initiate a district vote to request to increase in size of the school board from 5 to 7 members, to be held at the annual election.  If successful, the election of board members would be done at a special election.

Congratulations to Tim Chichester, Arkport CSD's very own high school science teacher. Tim not only won this weekend's Wineglass Marathon, he did so in a course record breaking time! Way to go Tim!

Oct. 2 through Oct. 7:

Arkport-Canaseraga Athletic Merger Survey

During the school board meeting on February 16, 2017, the respective Superintendents for the Canaseraga and Arkport schools formally introduced the idea of combining our athletic programs. Over numerous years, we have been able to bring athletes together to provide opportunities and to “save” teams from not being offered.

The Superintendents and Athletic Directors will be working together over the coming weeks to develop a formal plan to combine our programs. A plan will be presented to each school board on March 22 (Arkport) and March 23 (Canaseraga).
A formal recommendation will then be presented during each school board meeting held at the beginning of April – Canaseraga’s meeting will be held on April 6, 2017.
As the Superintendents and Athletic Directors begin their work, we would like to hear your thoughts / questions / comments / concerns. Your feedback can be provided by using the following survey link:
